Answers to the Habitat Spring 2008 Newsletter Trivia
Myth Busters: TRUE OR FALSE?
1. Due to generous community support, Habitat is able to give simple homes to local low-income families.
False – While we do have very generous community supporters, Pikes Peak Habitat does not give away homes. Habitat homeowners make a down payment of $1,000, contribute 350-450 hours of "sweat equity" building their home, and have a 30-year, no-interest mortgage.
2. Pikes Peak Habitat currently has a waitlist for families to receive Habitat homes.
True - With the need for affordable housing skyrocketing, the pool of qualified families has grown faster than Habitat can build. To cut down on wait time, Pikes Peak Habitat has organized homeownership orientations where interested families can get information and apply. The first orientation will be held in late summer.
3. Habitat for Humanity was founded by former U.S. President Jimmy Carter.
False – Habitat was started in 1976 in Americus, Georgia by Millard and Linda Fuller. President Carter and his wife Rosalynn (whose home is 8 miles from Americus) have been longtime Habitat supporters and volunteers who help bring national attention to the need for affordable housing.
